Special Lecture: God's Heart for Refugees

  • Third Church 600 Forest Ave Richmond, VA 23229 USA (map)

We are excited to offer deeper and timely teaching into God’s compassion— and our cooperation— in helping the hurting through a lecture by Paul Sydnor on caring for refugees.

It is clear, through your abundant giving to the Afghan Refugees at Fort Lee, that our local community cares deeply about helping the displaced and vulnerable. This lecture will help us better engage with all refugees, and particularly those families that we will be sponsoring soon. For those in our Third community who are planning to work closely with our sponsored refugee families, this training will provide a firm foundation for our ministry.

ABOUT PAUL: Paul is one of Third’s mission partners, wrote his Ph.D. dissertation on refugees, and serves as the ministry leader for the International Association for Refugees (www.iafr.org) in Lille, France, where he works with local churches to open a center for holistic refugee ministry. As an ordained pastor and a co-founder of the Refugee Highway Partnership (RHP) in Europe, Paul has helped build church-based ministries among refugees and asylum seekers throughout Europe since 1985.

Paul has completed the MDiv and MA Counseling (Gordon-Conwell) and recently a Ph.D. at the Oxford Centre for Mission Studies (OCMS) in Oxford, England. His research examines the intersection of forced displacement and faith and is titled "From Gravity to Grace: Finding a redemptive voice among Christian refugees in Europe." His dissertation traces the stories of displacement among a small community of believers in Malta. He looks at these stories through the lens of "decreation" as developed by Simone Weil. Paul’s lecture will include stories from refugee journeys as it considers the role of narrative theology in ministry, and it will highlight some of the take-away points for Paul's mission work.
