Stephanie Black
Missionary with Serge
For more than thirty years, Serge has been helping individuals and churches engage in global missions. Today, Serge’s work consists of sending and caring for missionaries, mentoring and equipping ministry leaders around the world, and developing resources for ongoing spiritual renewal.
After many years teaching in seminaries in Africa and India, Stephanie Black now serves Serge as the International Theological Education Specialist, in a cooperative appointment with World Outreach of the Evangelical Presbyterian Church (EPC). Before Stephanie’s 2021 home assignment, she had been based in Dublin, Ireland, but had used up her six-year visa eligibility there. In early September 2022, after much prayer and seeking God’s will, she moved to Nairobi, Kenya where she had previously served for a number of years. From this new homebase Stephanie will teach online or travel to teach in graduate-level theological institutions alongside Serge's church planting outreaches in Africa, Asia, and post-Christian Europe. She is also working on various theological education projects with the Association of Christian Theological Education of Africa.
“Teaching academic biblical and theological subjects allows me to share a gospel-centered approach to the Christian life with students.”
– Stephanie Black, Serge
Third at work: Third support allows Stephanie to live and work where she can best fulfill her calling to raise the standard of seminary teaching in the parts of the world where Christianity is growing the fastest.
God at work: Many Majority World seminary students tend to struggle with a Jesus plus mentality. (The desire to do more, say more, and act more in order to gain more security in Christ.) For Stephanie, it has been exciting to see her students grasp Paul’s point that Christ is sufficient (Col. 2), because Christ is supreme (Col. 1). There’s nothing more that needs to be done, no further spiritual value to be added. Stephanie has been able to witness many, “Ah-hah!” moments with her students.
Act now through prayer
Pray God’s guidance and wisdom for Stephanie as she continues to teach and mentor theological students in the Global South. She is also in demand to work on various theological education projects and needs to choose wisely. May she also be a blessing to many friends and colleagues in Nairobi.
