Providing encouragment and support
Barnabas International is an organization that encourages and supports global Christian workers and missionaries. Their primary way of supporting missionaries is through pastoral care including: pastoral counseling, clinical counseling, coaching, debriefing, crisis response, spiritual direction, training, and retreats.
Karen Carr is a Counseling Team Leader at Barnabas. In her role, she mentors, supervises, and gives leadership to 15 clinical staff personnel. Karen’s team receives requests for counseling care from many different mission organizations from all over the world. They also develop and offer Crisis Response Training that equips missionaries and leaders to care for one another in the midst of crisis.
“Being able to give a sense of hope and relief and letting people know they are not alone, and that help is available is a huge joy for me.”
— Karen Carr, Barnabas International Counseling Team Leader
Third at work: Third Church’s generous support of Karen since 1998 has allowed her to serve full time at Barnabas International. Without this support Karen would be much more limited in her availability to serve missionaries. Third’s one-time gift of a new computer during the Pandemic enabled her to offer virtual counseling, consultations, and online trainings.
God at work: A missionary in West Africa who was experiencing depression and burnout was seriously considering leaving the mission field. After counseling and spiritual direction, she experienced much healing and made the decision to re-orient the focus of her work. She is now involved in a ministry to West African truck drivers. Through this ministry, hundreds have heard stories from the Bible and have become new believers. Some have also gone on to share the gospel message with others.
Act now through prayer
Pray for Barnabas counselors to have wisdom to respond to each need in a way that honors and connects the missionary with care. Pray for safety in travel when Karen goes to facilitate Crisis Response Training in person, and for Karen to always remember that her source of hope and strength is in the Lord.
