Elizabeth Baleke
Missionary with Scripture Union Uganda
Scripture Union Uganda (SUU) has nine regional offices with more than thirty full time staff, as well as teams of volunteers who teach the Bible to young people in the schools and help them grow in their relationship with God. Scripture Union exists to make God’s Good News known to children, young people, and their families, as well as to encourage people of all ages to meet God daily through the Bible and prayer.
Beth Baleke first began volunteering with Scripture Union Uganda in 1986 before taking a short break to earn her Master of Arts in Communications at Wheaton College. Before returning to serve with SUU, she went home and began sharing the gospel with her friends and family. During this time, the Lord used Beth not only to help guide her relatives to Jesus but also, to start a church. In 1993, Beth began working full-time with the Scripture Union Uganda and has filled various roles, including serving as the first female SU National Director in East Africa. Beth’s current missionary role with SUU is focused on the extension of the Scripture Union ministry into Ethiopia, Tanzania, and South Sudan.
“Seeing the impact, listening to testimonies and stories, and watching changed lives. This brings so much joy to me and I love it!”
– Beth Baleke
Third at work: The designated funds from Third church have enabled SUU to fence the Eastern region office where they envision placing a radio station. The ongoing support enables SUU to bring together leaders from the refugee camps for training, purchase Bibles, facilitate travel, and to have ministry engagements in Northern Uganda and Tanzania.
God at work: Sara,* a single parent, and her eldest daughter, prayed and made the commitment to follow Jesus as their Lord and Savior, converting from Islam. Through God’s work in their lives, their entire family has also become followers of Jesus and are being discipled by a Scripture Union staff person. They are growing in their faith and the entire family exudes the joy of the Lord!

Act now through prayer
Pray for peace in East Africa (Ethiopia, Kenya, Burundi, Rwanda, South Sudan, Tanzania) and for the ministry to flourish. Ask God to allow SU’s ministry to reach a broader audience through the start of SU Radio and the completion of the KOBOKO refuges training center for South Sudanese refugees. Pray that SU ministry will be effective in giving African teenagers a biblical view of physical intimacy, in leading them to commitment to Christ, and in reducing the the very high rate of teen pregnancy.
