Did you know that Third Church hosted the “Queen of Katwe,” Phiona Mutesi from Katwe, Uganda, in November of 2012?
It's true! In addition to speaking at Third, she spoke at The Steward School, Veritas school, Church Hill Academy, and the Elijah House Academy.
For many years, Third has faithfully supported Sports Outreach Institute as one of our missions partners. Phiona, a child from the Ugandan slum of Katwe, was "discovered" by SOI and has blossomed into a chess prodigy under the indigenous leadership of Sports Outreach. Phiona became a national African chess champion at the age of 16. The story was picked up by an ESPN sports writer (Tim Crothers) who won awards for capturing the story. Tim expanded the article and wrote a book entitled Queen of Katwe. And now 4 years later, Walt Disney has released a major motion picture about the story.
The film, starring Golden Globe nominee, David Oyelowo, Oscar winner Lupita Nyong’o, and newcomer Madina Nalwanga, is directed by Mira Nair and was released on September 23.
We encourage you to support this film, watch the trailer, and read more about Phiona's story: queenofkatwe.com.
